The Trachilos Mystery: 6-Million-Year-Old Hominin Footprints in Crete

[INTRODUCTION]:
In 2017, while on holiday in Crete, Dr. Gerard Gierliński spotted peculiar markings on a coastal rock. What started as a casual observation turned into one of the most controversial and groundbreaking discoveries in recent human evolutionary science.

[THE_EXPEDITION]:
The PaleoICO mission focused on the fossilized beach sediments near Kissamos. Using 3D photogrammetry and laser scanning, the team documented over 50 footprints that show a distinctly human-like foot structure, including a large hallux (big toe) and a ball-of-the-foot impression.

[SCIENTIFIC_DEBATE]:
These tracks date to the Messinian period, a time when the Mediterranean Sea was drying up. Their presence in Crete suggests that early human ancestors may have roamed Southern Europe much earlier than the previously accepted “East African cradle” theory suggests.
